The Green Bay Packers travel west to face the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football. This game will kick off Week 9 of the NFL. The 49ers have a ton of injuries and are dealing with a COVID-19 situation that has seen the Packers vs. 49ers point spread get up to a touchdown. In this article, we’ll break down the matchup from an NFL betting perspective and provide a few free picks for the game, Packers vs. 49ers including player props.

The NFL season crossed the halfway point this week, as the Packers and 49ers kick things off on Thursday Night. Both teams have had COVID-19 scares this week, but the game is still scheduled to play. Neither team will be at full strength going into the short week, though the 49ers certainly have the shorter end of that proverbial stick.

Who Is Left To Suit Up for the Niners?

San Francisco was already ravaged by injuries on both sides of the ball before it lost both star tight end George Kittle and QB Jimmy Garoppolo for an extended period of time. Now, backup QB Nick Mullens will have to roll with an offense that will be without Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, and Tevin Coleman.

Green Bay’s defense can be beaten on the ground, but Kyle Shanahan has already shown that he wants to limit Jerick McKinnon’s workload, so it doesn’t seem likely that the 49ers will run straight 40 times tonight. Look for Shanahan to scheme up plenty of touches for whoever takes the field for the 49ers.

Bounce-Back Spot for the Packers

One of the most head-scratching results last week was the Minnesota Vikings traveling to Lambeau Field and upsetting the Packers 28-22 despite being seven-point underdogs. In Week 1, Aaron Rodgers carved this Vikings defense apart for 43 points, but after scoring 14 in the first half last week, Rodgers and company were virtually shut down the entire second half.

Rodgers is not known to have back-to-back bad games, so in this case, maybe the short week is a good thing, as he is surely itching to get back onto the field. The 49ers would normally be a tough matchup, but again, San Francisco is brutalized by injuries, so expect Rodgers to have a big night through the air.

Point Spread Pick: Packers (-7)

There are simply too many factors pointing to the Packers here in this spot. San Francisco will be throwing out a patchwork offense with limited time to prepare against one of the best secondaries in the league. Mullens is one of the more experienced backup quarterbacks in the league, so he likely won’t be a disaster, but a motivated Rodgers should score enough to cover this big number, even on the road.

Davante Adams Player Prop: Over 79.5 receiving yards

If we expect Rodgers to have a big game, that in turn would mean a big game for his favorite target, Davante Adams. He fell short of this number last week but was able to still score 3 touchdowns, proving how involved Adams was in the passing attack. There is no reason to think that Adams will slow down tonight, as he can cover this number with just a few effective routes. Bank on the talent here and take the over.

Jerrick McKinnon Player Prop: Over 2.5 catches

Taking a McKinnon over is certainly risky given Shanahan’s propensity to change up his running back gameplay seemingly on the fly sometimes. However, with McKinnon and JaMycal Hasty being the only two options in the backfield, McKinnon will be forced on the field a good amount. If the game script holds, and the 49ers are behind as the Packers vs. 49ers betting odds suggest, McKinnon should soar past this number.

McKinnon has logged at least 2 catches in all but two games this season, one of them being the win over the New England Patriots when Shanahan said after that they were intentionally resting McKinnon. There’s some heavy juice here, -190, but it looks to be a lock tonight, so take it.
