The ninth week of the NFL season wraps up with an AFC East rivalry showdown, as Cam Newton and the struggling New England Patriots take on the New York Jets. Sam Darnold is once again out with a shoulder injury, meaning Joe Flacco is back at the helm. Flacco has struggled mightily so far this season, losing both of his starts by a combined score of 54-10, including a shutout against the Miami Dolphins. One team is going to end its losing streak on Monday night. Let’s try and figure out who it will be.

Patriots Still Banged Up

The Patriots got off to a solid start this season, but a big part of their recent four-game slide has been a wealth of injuries on both sides of the ball. They will once again be without all-world CB Stephon Gilmore, though that loss shouldn’t matter as much given the lack of weapons on the Jets.

On offense, Newton is once again down a few weapons. N’Keal Harry is out with a concussion, and while Julian Edleman will be playing, a nagging leg injury has downgraded his playmaking ability. Combine that with a weak running game, and it’s no wonder that this New England offense has been struggling. All that considered, a date with the Jets might be just what the doctor ordered.

Crowder Making His Return Tonight

The Jets know plenty about wide receiver injuries themselves. Jamison Crowder has been out since mid-October, but he will be making his return in tonight’s game. His importance cannot be overstated, as he has seen double-digit targets in all of his games this season.

Tonight will be the first time all season that Crowder will be playing alongside Denzel Mims and Breshad Perriman. That trio may not strike fear in anyone’s hearts, but getting everyone back and healthy should provide a morale boost in tonight’s game, one that looks winnable despite the large point spread.

Point Spread Pick: Jets (+9.5)

We would much prefer the Patriots vs. Jets betting line of Jets (+10) from earlier this weekend, but this still seems like too large a number to ask a team coming off four straight losses to cover.

The Patriots will probably have to score over 21 points to cover this number, and while that’s certainly possible against this horrid Jets defense, it seems more likely that New England continues to struggle. The combo of Crowder’s return and Gilmore’s absence could be enough to get the Jets passing game going, so pinch your nose and take the points tonight.

Jamison Crowder Player Prop: Over 4.5 catches

This probably comes as no surprise with how much Crowder has been featured in this article. It is hard to overstate his importance to this Jets offense. Crowder has catch totals of 7, 8, 7, and 7 in the four games he’s played in this year. There’s no reason to think that Flacco won’t be peppering Crowder with short targets, especially if they can get a big play to Perriman to spread the coverage.

The main concern on this is Bill Belichick’s propensity to eliminate the opponent’s top playmaker, but even with that, 5 receptions seems well within reach.

James White Player Prop: Under 3.5 catches

James White’s usage in the last two games has been rather puzzling. He is known as the pass-catching back who plays more when the Patriots are down and needing to throw to comeback. Well, the Patriots were in a back-and-forth contest with the Buffalo Bills last week and were trailing the whole game two weeks ago against the San Francisco 49ers. And yet, White logged 2 catches and 1 catch, respectfully.

Given the likely game script, it doesn’t seem likely that White will get much volume in the passing game, which makes this under look quite enticing.
